Celebrate Heart Month: Take Action for Your Heart

February is American Heart Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and promoting heart-healthy lifestyles. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but it can often be prevented by making healthier choices. This month, let’s take action to protect our hearts and encourage those we love to do the same.

Know the Signs

Heart disease can manifest in various ways, and it’s crucial to recognize the symptoms early. Women, in particular, may experience different signs than men. Common symptoms include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or upper stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Unusual fatigue

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Heart-Healthy Tips

Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease. Here are some tips from the NHLBI’s “Take Action for Your Heart: Get Started!” fact sheet

  1. Get Enough Quality Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Poor sleep can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.
  2. Eat Better: Follow a balanced eating plan like the DASH diet, which emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Read nutrition labels to choose foods low in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.
  3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Choose healthy snacks and stay hydrated with water. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week.
  4. Be More Active: Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Even small changes, like taking the stairs or walking during breaks, can make a big difference.
  5. Stop Smoking: Any amount of smoking damages your heart and blood vessels. Seek support to quit smoking and improve your heart health.
  6. Control Cholesterol: Monitor your cholesterol levels and follow a heart-healthy lifestyle to keep them in check.

Support Heart Health Initiatives

This Heart Month, consider supporting campaigns like the American Heart Association’s “Life is Why” campaign. By donating at participating retailers or purchasing products that trigger a donation, you can contribute to the fight against heart disease and stroke. Learn more and get involved by visiting Life is Why – American Heart Association.
