National Healthcare Corp. is planning to invest at least $80 million to build new assisted living and skilled-nursing facilities in Middle Tennessee, a move that should generate up to 500 new jobs. Occupancy of skilled nursing homes is expected to increase dramatically over the next decade as more baby boomers retire and seek new living arrangements, experts say. Steve Flatt, president of NHC, said the story in Middle Tennessee is no different. “We’ve done estimates, and we think there is a substantial need that can be met in these communities,” he said.
